Module version for: 2008/9

Email: r.a.rastall@reading.ac.uk

Aims:
The module aims to provide students with a good working knowledge of the properties and behaviour of enzymes and also to provide the basic practical skills necessary to work with enzymes in the laboratory.

Assessable learning outcomes:
At the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Describe the principles of enzymatic catalysis and plot and analyse enzyme kinetic data
  • Determine the specific activity of an enzyme preparation
  • Determine values for KM and Vmax for an enzyme
  • Determine the optimum pH and temperature of an enzyme
  • Determine the inhibition constant of an enzyme inhibitor

    Additional outcomes:
Students will enhance their experimental planning and data analysis skills.

    Outline content:
The module will cover the following areas:

  • Overview of enzymes and their importance
  • Principles of chemical and enzymatic catalysis
  • Enzyme mechanisms
  • Parameters affecting enzyme activity
  • Enzyme inhibition

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module will consist of a short course of lectures followed by a student-centred practical investigation in the laboratory.
