Aims:
To provide the student with the knowledge and understanding necessary to identify the factors which determine construction cost and how to quantify them from preliminary design information. An appreciation of the design imperatives for different types of projects and the ability to balance these against economic and financial constraints will be examined.

Assessable learning outcomes:

Identify the factors which determine construction cost and understand how to quantify them from the data of preliminary design information.

Appreciate the design imperatives for different types of projects and be able to balance these against economic and financial constraints in the preparation of a cost plan for the design stage of a building.

Quantify and evaluate different classifications of cost and price in relation to different building types, forms, owners and time frames.

Outline content:

Cost Forecasting: The theories and techniques of predicting construction cost at inception stage, prior to design and the methods used to evaluate and inform design decisions.

Cost planning at Design Stage. The theory of cost planning systems and the concept of economic balanced design. The practice of elemental design cost planning and control.

Cost control systems: Methods and procedures of controlling cost during the design stage and reconciliation at construction stage.

Total Building Cost. The concept of total building cost and methods for its calculation and use at design stage.
