Aims:
To introduce some key concepts in management.
Appreciate the principles of organisations and the factors influencing their development
Introduce project management as a discipline
To appreciate how people behave and respond to management
Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will be able to understand the development of management theory
To understand the role of organisations and how they are shaped to meet objectives
Appreciate the increasing importance of effective project management
Be aware of the factors affecting human performance and managerial effectiveness
Explain and contrast the the main theories of management
Identify dominant model of management in organizations
Determine appropriate organization structure for a given scenario
Compare functional to matrix organizations and the implications for managers

Final examination , mid-year exam (marked internally only)
Examinations:
Part of a three hour written examination paper in April/May
Requirements for a pass:
The students must obtain a mark of at least 40% in each written examination paper and an overall mark of 50% in the University examinations.
Reassessment arrangements:
Students who fail to obtain the minimum mark in any paper, or 50% overall are required to re-sit the failed paper in August/September. Such students are, however, permitted to proceed through the summer course phase and dissertation phase of the course.
