Aims:
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Apply a range of degree-level study and assessment techniques to their own learning practice
  • Understand and discuss key contemporary themes in human geography
  • Work effectively as a member of a small team and as an individual learner
  • Use a virtual learning environment to study and seek support from moderators
  • Progress to the second and third years of their degree programme with a wide range of appropriate teaching and learning skills

    On completion of this module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • Search for information and data in the University library and online
  • Evaluate the validity and reliability of information and data
  • Recognise appropriate structures and styles for essay writing
  • Plan, write and reference a coursework essay with greater confidence
  • Make an examination essay plan and identify other successful examination strategies
  • Conceptualise and evaluate key current debates in human geography

    Outline content:

  • Introductory meeting to establish aims, objectives and procedures for module
  • Core skills for students in human geography:
  • Retrieving and evaluating information and data
  • Writing in the academy
  • Literature skills: reading, referencing and interpretation
  • Examination and assessment strategies
  • IT skills
  • Practical and thematic applications:
  • Small group seminars in topical, thematic areas chosen by human geography staff
  • Coursework essay preparation in one thematic area

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    The module will be taught by a combination of lectures, tutorials, directed learning via a web-based interface with course tutors and group work. The module will begin with an introductory meeting at which aims, objectives and administrative procedures will be established. Thereafter, the module will employ two primary learning methods: small-group tutorials and web-based learning using small group exercises, supported by a moderated discussion forum. Students will be expected to produce 1 coursework essay (2000 words) and 4 Web-based assessment exercises. Their contribution to small-group tutorials will also be assessed.
