Aims:
This module will give students an understanding of the nature of e-business activities from practical, technical, business and strategic persectives. It will equip students to participate in the basic practical activities of setting up an e-business site and to understand the issues involved in its operation. It will also make students aware of the wider business and social implications of e-business.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • identify the importance of e-business and its impact on traditional organisations
  • recognise issues related to e-business development
  • develop an e-business strategy
  • research and evaluate a wide range of existing e-business operations (both web sites and business activities)
  • design and produce a basic e-business web site and specify the business functions and activities that it would support.

    Additional outcomes:
    It is also intended that students should spend some time analysing and reflecting on the social and economic implications of emerging e-business and how it may develop and influence the business in the e-market.

    Outline content:
    The module will cover the following topics:

  • evolution of e-business
  • e-business strategy
  • emerging standards in e-business
  • e-business security issues from a technical and business perspective
  • social, ethical and legal issues arising from e-business
  • current underlying technologies
  • good practice in the design and operation of e-business web sites

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    This module will be a mixture of lectures on the theoretical aspects of e-business and practical sessions on the techniques involved.

  • Theoretical: business models and value chain of e-commerce, security issues from a technical and business perspective, emerging standards in all aspects of e-business, legislative procedures that apply to e-business, the social and economic implications of e-business, reflection on future developments of e-business.
  • Practical: the current state of e-business, i.e. knowledge of a range of existing e-business operations, the outline characteristics of underlying technologies, the software packages and techniques required to produce a basic web site, the ability to design an e-business strategy, the practical and technical ability to design and create a basic e-business site, awareness of good practice in the design, implementation and operation of an e-business venture.

    Assessment:
    This module consists of two components for the assessment: Coursework (30%) and examination (70%).
    Coursework
    Students will be required to produce a report with two parts:
    * Phase A (15%) in the Autumn term, students will define a business scenario in which they propose, in an 'internal' report to their supposed colleagues in the enterprise, a web-based initiative.
    * Phase B (15%) in the Spring term, students will design and implement a basic, functional e-business website and outline the commercial and logistical mechanisms that would support it. They will document their development of the web site in Phase B of the report. The prototype web site will be demonstrated by students in the Summer term.
    Examinations
    There will be a 2 hour examination on the theoretical aspects of E-Business.
    Requirements for a pass
    Students will be required to obtain an overall mark of 40% based on the coursework and the examination.
    Re-assessment
    Students will be re-examined in August/September.
