Aims:
To enable students to work effectively with and for those with mental health needs
Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will be able to:
1. Describe the experience of mental illness from the perspective of service users and carers
2. Demonstrate an awareness of the services available for those with mental health needs
3. Identify how to promote recovery for those with mental health needs
Additional outcomes:
1. An understanding of medical and social models of mental illness, and how these inform services
2. An awareness of the legal and policy framework for social work with those who have mental health needs
Outline content:
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
A series of 10 lectures and workshops that will include presentations by service users and carers.

Coursework:
A 2,000 word case study of a service user’s experience of mental health services.
Relative percentage of coursework: 100%
Penalties for late submission: Penalties for late submission of course work will be in accordance with University policy. Fail at first attempt as a result of non-submission.
Examinations:
Requirements for a pass: A mark of 40%
Reassessment arrangements: Re-examination by 1st September.
