Aims:
The module builds on existing nurse knowledge in biological sciences and how these inform professional practice in nursing.

Assessable learning outcomes:
To appreciate how knowledge from biological sciences informs their own professional practice.
To understand the knowledge from the biological sciences underpinning the concept of stress.
To understand the specific maladaptive responses to stress occurring in the cardio vascular system and the action of beta blockers on this system.
To appreciate how this knowledge can inform professional practice and stimulate a continuing interest in the biological sciences.

Outline content:
Part 1: Introduces biological science and relevance to professional practice and the introduction of stress.
Part 2: Examines the body’s responses to stress and related conditions or diseases.
Part 3: Examines anatomy and physiology, both structures involved in stress response.
Part 4:
Examines the responses of the cardio vascular system to stress and the actions of beat blockers on diseases in this system.

A 2000 word academic essay on one of the given titles at the end of the distance learning book.

Requirements for a pass: 40%

Reassessment arrangements:

Students who do not obtain the required pass mark in the assessed work will be given the opportunity to resubmit the work on one further occasion: the resit grade cannot exceed 40%.
