Aims:
To develop the ability to understand and apply appropriately the principles of management and leadership within the context of community and primary care.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will draw upon and critically appraise theories of leadership and change in order to formulate a plan to improve an aspect of practice within their sphere of community nursing

Additional outcomes:
1. Students will draw upon knowledge of quality improvement strategies in the NHS in order to develop quality improvement initiatives that are applicable to their sphere of community nursing

2. Students will draw upon knowledge of social psychological theory in order to identify critical success factors in teamwork and to formulate plans to improve teamworking in their sphere of community nursing

3. Students will draw upon knowledge of human motivation in order to develop appropriate strategies to maximise nursing performance.

Outline content:
The module is delivered via ten three-hour lectures. Key lectures include the nature of leadership, managing change, achieving excellence and team working.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module is taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, simulation exercises and self assessment methods. Students are encouraged to transfer their learning into the practical environment via theory / practice link exercises. Additional learning takes place via individual and group tutorials.

Assessment:
Coursework

Students are asked to produce a 2500 word assignment outlining a plan for making change in their sphere of community nursing

Relative percentage of coursework: 100%

Penalties for late submission: Will be in accordance with university policy

Requirements for a pass 40%

Reassessment arrangements: Resubmission date of failed assignment to be agreed by board of examiners
