Aims:
This module aims to enable students to begin to identify particular (individual) interests and concerns, to become aware of the range of art practice today and to become self critical through informed debate. It is also intended to allow students to make the transition between their previous diverse art experiences and the BA degree.

The module also aims to encourage the development of critical awareness of contemporary art practice, oral communication skills and the students' effectiveness in group situations, to develop the ability to make effective use of time and resources available and the ability to identify primary sources of information and to locate and access information.
Outline content:
Students will work independently and in groups on a common directed area of focus. They will develop their understanding of the relationship between the intention and the outcome of their work. Students will extend their experience in the use of 2D, 3D and time based processes. Students will extend their knowledge of contemporary art practice. This module is intended to be highly exploratory. Students will take the initiative in generating ideas and work in response to the subject.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Students will work with tutorial support to allow a guided introduction to the independent development of their work. Students will be introduced to a range of approaches to studio work. The students will explore the relationship between intention and outcomes in both their studio and written work.
Students will be involved in formative assessment in tutorials, group tutorials and group presentations. There will also be visits to museums and galleries plus workshop and health and safety induction. Power-point, video and web presentations may be used to supplement other teaching strategies. There will be summative feedback at end of project tutorials with studio tutors.

Assessment:
Coursework
1. Five bodies of work, supporting work and notebooks.
2. Five written statements of (c.500) words describing and evaluating work done over the module.
Relative percentage of coursework: 100%
Examinations
Continuous assessment of coursework.
Requirements for a pass
A mark of at least 40%.
Reassessment arrangements
Students will be required to make individually prescribed course work to be presented and reassessed by 1 September. A re-examinee will be given a mark for the re-assessed module which reflects the candidate's performance in the reassessment. The mark used for purposes of progression shall be the higher of (a) the mark achieved in the original examination or (b) the actual mark on re-examination.
