Aims:
This module aims to introduce students to skills and processes at the foundation of contemporary art practices. Students will become familiar with the department workshops, tools, machinery and health and safety procedure.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be able to:

  • use a range of skills and processes relevant to contemporary art practice
  • demonstrate an appropriate level of technical proficiency
  • independently identify and use appropriate methods and materials
  • demonstrate the ability to locate and assemble information on the subject by their own research.

    Additional outcomes:
This module engages students in the development of research and presentation techniques. Students will also extend their skills in communication and problem solving as well as developing a familiarity with appropriate terminology.

    Outline content:
Students will make a series of works that investigate core skills and processes of contemporary art practice. They will identify and use vocabulary specific to these processes and will begin to articulate the relationship between the method of facture and content. Students will further extend their knowledge in how practitioners use these processes.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will be workshop and studio based. Students will be inducted into the various workshops, and facilities of the Department. There will be instruction, as appropriate, into the use of a number of processes relevant to the contemporary artist. These will include text, drawing, and IT based based processes. Group presentations will involve students in the evaluation of work undertaken. They will identify and assemble information related to the processes in which they have become involved.
