Aims:
To provide students with an overview of the political and cultural history of Germany since 1945, and to enable them to develop practice and confidence in reading and analysing related literary, historical, and cinematic material.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will have demonstrated their ability to:

  • identify and discuss major events, factors and figures in post-war German history
  • analyse, evaluate and put into context a selection of German literary and historical texts and films
  • develop skills in textual analysis and in the study of literature
  • make appropriate use of secondary sources.

    Additional outcomes:
    Students will be able to:

  • develop their language skills by reading short German texts and watching German films
  • develop an understanding of different approaches to written texts and films
  • develop skills in communication, information handling, and team-working

    Outline content:
    Throughout the Autumn and Spring terms there will be weekly lectures and seminars on iconic figures and themes reflecting the history and culture of Germany after 1945. These will typically include the post-1945 history of Berlin with particular reference to political division, works by Wolf Biermann and Heinrich Böll, the historical and political significance of Willy Brandt and Konrad Adenauer
    In the Summer term there will be revision sessions.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    Lectures and tutorials. The texts and films are in German (the latter in subtitled versions); the lectures and tutorials are conducted in English.

    Assessment:
    Coursework
    1 essay to be handed in by noon on the first day of the Spring and Summer Terms. Two worksheets per term to be completed on different topics.

    Relative percentage of coursework: 50% (40% for essays, 10% for worksheets)

    One two-hour examination in Summer Term

    Reassessment arrangements
    One two-hour examination in August/September resit period. Assessed coursework mark over 40% to be carried forward, otherwise coursework to be resubmitted by 1 September.
