Aims:
The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to work as an assistant in a German/Austrian school as an English language teaching assistant. It also aims to provide evidence of successful completion of an assistant placement in Germany/Austria through the production of a written report in German.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will be expected to demonstrate:
- successful completion of a period of nine months working in a German/Austrian school environment.
- a general understanding and knowledge of a German/Austrian school environment and an ability to reflect actively on it.
- competent use of German idiom and terminology appropriate to the school environment.

Additional outcomes:
Students will have developed organisational and presentational skills, and the ability to be self-reliant and to co-operate with working colleagues.
They will also have developed the skill of preparing teaching materials in English and of teaching English to small groups of students in a German/Austrian school environment.

Outline content:
Students will spend one school year in a German/Austrian school teaching English to small groups of students, as directed by the host school. They will teach a maximum of 12 hours per week. They will write a report on general and specific aspects of their work experience. Preparatory classes on this will be offered in the Summer term of the Second Year.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Students will be introduced to aspects of the work situation in schools, as well as learning by experience on the job.

Assessment:
Coursework:
Placement report: 5,000 words in German, to be submitted by noon on the first day of the Autumn Term of the Final Year. (20 credits). 60% of marks awarded for content, 40% for language.
Work experience: Non-contributory (20 credits)
At the discretion of the module convenor students may be asked to discuss their work in a viva voce examination.
