Aims:
This module aims to develop practical and transferable skills within the context of, and appropriate to, the study of a particular period.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:

  • locate and assemble bibliographic and other information by independent research, using IT as appropriate
  • organise material and articulate arguments effectively in different kinds of written exercises and orally
  • carry out a variety of skill-based exercises linked to, and appropriate to, the investigation of the specific period
  • identify and explain the particularities of sources and historical methodologies relating to study of the period

    Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to develop the student's effectiveness in group situations and in teamwork, where appropriate.

    Outline content:
This subject content is determined by the outline content of the co-requisite Period module. The skills module will start from class-based activity relating to the Period. Students will complete TWO skills-based exercises as specified by the module convenor. Each piece will be broadly equivalent to 2,500 words, and may be sub-divided into different tasks. These may include: literature search and evaluation (using both online bibliographic searching and identification of relevant websites); source evaluation, with presentation of the conclusions either individually or as a group; statistical exercise, with use of appropriate software and independent derivation of data from evidence; seminar paper; other forms of oral and written presentation. These activities will serve to emphasise, where appropriate, the distinctive nature and problems of sources for the Period and the principal methodologies deployed by historians in studying them.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will be taught within the relevant Period by means of seminars. In addition, students will be required to prepare for classes and carry out exercises.
