Aims:
To give students an understanding of the main rural issues affecting the UK and EU and the policy options for addressing them.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the course students attending it should be able to:
1. Describe the development of the current framework of land-use planning in the UK and assess its impact on rural areas.
2. Describe and evaluate current UK rural policy and future options.
3. Describe the concept of "integrated rural development"; assess its merits and current impact in a UK context; evaluate the constraints on its future development.
4. Identify the key rural issues facing policy makers in the UK and EU and assess their relative importance from a UK and EU perspective.
