Aims:
To provide an understanding of the sequence of feasibility, design and construction of simple medium to high-
rise buildings and to provide knowledge of the technology used in the elements and components of such construction.

Assessable learning outcomes:

  • explain the construction technology of commercial and industrial buildings
  • evaluate 'fitness for purpose'.
  • describe the advantages and disadvantages of alternative construction methods.
  • describe internal components to achieve user requirements of flexibility and finish
  • consider the implications for fire safety

    Additional outcomes:

  • Students will be encouraged to develop oral and graphical communication and teamwork skills.
  • Evaluate current construction practices, issues and trends

    Outline content:
    Autumn

  • Foundations - the available methods of providing foundations to buildings
  • Frames - evaluation of concrete and steel for use as the skeleton frame of a building and the factors which influence selection.
  • Structural Floors - materials, constructional features and selection.
  • Claddings - selection and materials, constructional features
  • Roofs - types suitable for commercial and large span buildings.
  • Stairs - types available and design criteria
    Spring
  • Internal components- partitions, suspended ceilings, raised floors
  • Fire safety- passive fire protection
