Aims:

  • To bring together the information from all the modules.
  • To test the ability of the students to apply knowledge from the course to a realistic example of a construction business and the projects it undertakes.

    Assessable learning outcomes:
    The student will be able to collate and develop data and information relating to the undertaking of a development and construction project and draw conclusions and make recommendations for action regarding the commercial success and/or achievement of project aims.

    Additional outcomes:
    The student will be able to identify problems, encountered or likely to be met, in the achievement of the aims of project aim from data and information supplied. The student will also learn how to work in a team.

    Outline content:
    The students will be in teams of not more that four members. Each team will be provided with the background, details, commercial data and occurrences on a development project or an identified stage of the project.

    Scenarios will be described which produce problems and decisions that require to be made.

    The problems will incorporate one or more of the following aspects of the course programme modules:
    • System of organisation and procurement
    • Design and development problem
    • Cost management, monitoring and control
    • Management of project team
    • Legal regulation of project activities
    • Alternative solutions

    The teams will be asked to report on and analyse the project, the problem and recommend a method of solution.

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    The module is project work. The student will be provided with full details of the task to be undertaken, (see above) and a full list of references which will provide background, theoretical information relating to the type of project and nature of the problem which has occurred on it. The student will work in team to analyse and suggest solutions and actions. Full tutorial support will be given.
