Aims:
To introduce the mathematics of linearity needed for other modules; to develop the algebra of vector spaces and linear mappings.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
• carry out appropriate calculations involving the concepts of vector space, linear independence, dimension and linear mapping.

Additional outcomes:

Outline content:
Linear algebra is the study of vector spaces and linear mappings. These arise from matrix theory as well as less obvious sources such as differential equations. Some aspects of the subject are best considered by matrix methods, but others are more illuminating when treated from the point of view of vector spaces, where general structure is more easily seen. This is an elegant approach which affects many branches of mathematics.
