Aims:

  • To develop practical and musicianship skills at the appropriate level
  • To equip students to respond to aspects of musical team work, where applicable
  • To provide an understanding of the criteria for effective learning in music

    Assessable learning outcomes:
    On successful completion of this module, students will:

  • Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the components of music, including rhythm, scales and repertoire
  • Display an understanding of the skills required to successfully interact with other musicians through group music making
  • Develop an understanding of the skills required in instrumental/ vocal work
  • Apply the instrumental/vocal skills developed to a performance situation

    Additional outcomes:

  • Enhanced knowledge of the components of music, including rhythm, scales and repertoire
  • Enhanced confidence in playing instruments
  • Gaining more experience of participating in musical ensembles, which may include orchestras or choirs

    Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
    This module has three pathways. It either consists of individual instrumental/ vocal lessons and participation in university provided group music making such as orchestra, choir and jazz band or consists of group lessons in guitar or of group lessons in percussion, subject to availability and demand.

    Coursework Assessment for Route A is based on the Instrumental Tutor’s report and participation in the end-of-term concert; Route B has a practical assessment at the end of term

    Reassessment arrangements re-submission of assignment by a date specified by Exam Board
