Aims:
1. To facilitate a deeper understanding of self; the internal world; conscious and unconscious motivation, and of how these manifest in interaction with others
2. To enable students to the experience and consider the links between psychodynamic theory and personal experience
3. To facilitate an understanding of underlying group dynamics
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the Course students will be able to:
1. Evaluate their personal experience of this module in the light of psychodynamic theory, for example in relation to defence mechanisms, containment and wider group dynamics
2. Recognise and contain their own feelings
3. Formulate and articulate an understanding of self in relation to others
Additional outcomes:
1. Students will be encouraged to think about themselves in relation to others
2. Students will be helped to understand their personal experiences of life and work
Outline content:
A weekly experiential group will offer students the opportunity to reflect upon the dynamics of a large group and their role and experience within it.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
A large experiential group will be facilitated by a senior staff member. Students will be assisted and encouraged to develop self awareness within the group, identify group dynamics and processes and reflect honestly about personal experience within the group.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed on the following
1. A piece of reflective writing of 2500 words. This will draw upon the experience of the weekly large experiential group and the student’s experience of the course as a whole, including their experience of assessment of learning.

Relative percentage of Coursework: 100%
Penalties for late submission: Work submitted late will have a penalty applied. 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from a piece of work that is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any agreed extension to that deadline). Once this period has elapsed a mark of zero will be recorded.
Examinations: None
Requirements for a pass: An average mark of 40% overall
Re-assessment: Coursework may be carried forward if it has a confirming mark of 40%. Otherwise, written assessments must be resubmitted by the end of the Summer Term.
