Aims:
Writing Credit L3 is a piece of assessed written work which builds on the research skill developed in L2. It allows a student to independently research and produce written work of some length on a set topic. It also allows the School to evaluate a student’s ability to develop an argument and to do so within a specified number of pages (and to a specific format).
Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will further develop skills in terms of identifying and applying research agendas. They will work independently, towards the analysis, synthesis, evaluation and critique of a legal topic.
Additional outcomes:
In addition to those listed in the School’s ‘core skills statement’, the module aims to facilitate further development of IT skills. The module also aims to develop the ability of students to generate and manage achievable research goals.
Outline content:
Not applicable.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
• In the Spring Term of Year 2 students will be given a list of Writing Credit L3 essay titles.
• Each student is required to list in order of preference three of these titles and submit the list by the deadline set for the selection of Final Year options.
• Students will be informed by email after the end of the Part 2 exams of the title they are required to write.
• If a student does not submit the form with the list of three preferred titles by the deadline the Law School will assign the student a title.
• Where possible students will be given one of their three preferred titles, but in certain circumstances a title which was not one of these preferences may be assigned.
• The Writing Credit L3 essay must be submitted by the required date, which will be specified at the start of the new academic year. The submission date is liable to be near the start of the Easter vacation in the Final Year.
• No assistance will be provided by any member of staff with respect to Writing Credit L3. No drafts or plans of essays may be submitted to any member of staff.
• Writing Credit L3 is subject to the Assessed Work rules to be found in the current edition of the School Guide (Programme Assessment).
