Aquatic Systems Science and Management

Systems biology

Theme Leader: Professor Penny Johnes, Professor Paul Whitehead

The University of Reading has long been recognised as a centre of national and international excellence in water science research in the UK, with expertise in a wide range of water research areas spanning the range from physical to chemical and biological sciences. It has strong collaborative links with many water research groups nationally and over the last 5 years strong links have been developed with international partners, many of them world-leaders in the field of water

The group conducts multi-disciplinary research on the structure, function, problems, modelling and management of a range of aquatic environments, funded by EU, DEFRA, DTI, NERC, EPSRC, ESRC, the EA, English Nature and private companies (Thames Water plc, AWE).

Particular areas of expertise rest in the nutrient hydrochemistry of lakes, rivers and riparian wetlands, simulation of algal population dynamics in eutrophic lakes, and evaluation of the impact of land use and management on water quality at the catchment scale. Staff at the group combine field research and laboratory experiments with the development of a range of modelling approaches to simulate system behaviour at a range of scales. Model development is undertaken both to underpin process studies, and to provide robust tools for environmental management and allow simulation of behaviour of aquatic environments and their catchments from process-based modelling at the finest level of detail, scaling up to systems modelling at the catchment scale.

Our expertise also extends to the detailed biology of aquatic systems.
